Welcome to Thee Eternal.
Here is how this works: loathe though I am to load another
voice into the digital cacophony, silence seems worse. This blog’s statement of
purpose is as follows: some things must last. Those born in one of the
pre-digital generations before attention spans were shattered for all time
understand that not all consumer goods are non-durable, that not all culture is
disposable.
The real question is, what lasts and why? We will consider
the literary, the visual, the aural, the ethereal, words and music and pictures,
poetry and prose and many hybrid species that live in the interstices. We will
not necessarily do so in an orderly manner because our (and your) sensibilities
probably don’t work that way. We all live in a fragmented, discontinuous and
disjointed world and may as well admit it. You are invited both to observe and
to participate.
Actual content ranges over books, films, art and music in no
systematic order or presentation except as things occur to me. William Hazlitt once
wrote his essays in much the same way, though these are not they by any means.
The entries here are (merely) considered opinions about expressive forms that
have interested me for a very long time. (I’m in the grip of later middle age
dread as I write this.) The purpose here is above all to connect, to shake
oneself from stasis and passive comforts and participate in the tumult and
noise (instead of just hiding from it). Your carefully considered
input/reaction is welcomed.
Onward. Onward now.
